As many as half of China’s pigs, an estimated 300 million, have died of the virus or been exterminated since the disease took hold 13 months ago. In the past months it has advanced to Vietnam, Laos and South Korea.There is no treatment for swine influenza. There is a vaccine affected pigs should be bathed to. Piglets with infected mothers should be fed other milk enriched to not stunt there growth.
The Signs of swine flu in pigs can include fever, depression, coughing (barking), discharge from the nose or eyes, sneezing, breathing difficulties, eye redness or inflammation, and going off feed. Some pigs infected with influenza, however, may show no signs of illness at all. If your pet pig is effected don’t worry it has a less than one percent chance of killing your pig. Swine flu is contagious from person to person or pig to pig. It can be spread through the air by droplets produced by sneezing, coughing, or by direct contact with saliva or mucus secretion.
